Natalia Varela
Natalia’s journey into beekeeping began in 2013 when she restored her family’s mill in Galicia and discovered wild bees nesting in its walls. Starting with just two hives and no experience, she entered a male-dominated field. In 2023, she professionalized her work, emphasizing the essential role of bees in environmental health and food security, particularly as climate change disrupts natural cycles. She highlights gender biases and a lack of collaboration in the beekeeping community but finds hope in women-led rural initiatives that prioritize cooperation.
